Here is a small selection of the life drawings I have been doing over the past few months:
Ruby, in blue and red pencil- I used repetitive circle shapes to represent femininity and motherhood.Tim, in 9B pencil- I concentrated on more angular shapes and high contrast to create a dramatic effect.Scott, in 9B pencil. In this image I used lines as shading and focussed on turning the shadows into shapes.Ruby, in blue pencil. In this image I tried to create a sensitive dreamy feel, focusing in on the pregnant belly and breasts Ruby, red pencil. In this image, I wanted to add cubist elements with more curved and circular shapes to represent femininity and motherhood.Eve, 9B pencil. In this quick 15-minute sketch I focused on bold gestural marks and shading.Ruby, wet charcoal and water-soluble graphite. In this picture, I experimented for the first time with wet charcoal. I continued exploring with circles and shapes in a cubist-inspired style. Scott, 6B and 9b pencil. In this image, I focused a lot on negative space- the dark pencil creating a strong contrast in the background.Amie, 6B pencil. This was a more traditional drawing using a pencil to create tone, I focused on the model’s face for this image.Amie, 6B pencil. A traditional drawing focusing on perspective.Amie 6B pencil. Another traditional drawing, but focusing on some elements of negative space.Amie 6B pencil. A relaxed pose, I tried to just focus on getting proportions right in this 20 minute pose. Amie, 6B pencil. I enjoyed drawing Amie in this seated pose. I decided to draw her in a traditional style but added a few darker lines and more defined shadows.
I have been experimenting with styles and mediums, but I often lean towards 9B pencils or red and blue pencils for my drawings. I like to add an element of cubism to my work, and I also enjoy focusing on shapes, shadows the repetition of shapes, and elements of negative and positive space.
Which style do you prefer? Do you like the more traditional style of figurative drawing or is it more interesting to incorporate a more stylised aspect to the drawings?
I think I enjoy drawing more stylised depictions of the human form, but it is good to sometimes focus on more traditional drawing.
