What I’m working on

Rachel Crawshaw- sketchbook page exploring negative space, collage and mono printing
Rachel Crawshaw – collage and mono print on paper in progress – vessels and birds

My current art explorations are centered around vessels- like vases, cups and bowls. I am also interested in bird imagery. The Vessels and birds are both images I am using in my own symbolic language. I am trying to create a visual language for myself to imbue more personal meaning and depth into my art.

My current work is linked to my recent interest in Jungian Psychoanalysis. Symbols play a large part in Jung’s ideas on exploring the unconscious mind.

In terms of practical techniques, I have been enjoying drawing multiple vessel studies in my sketchbooks, just with simple pencil. I am interested in the various shapes of the vessels and in how they are decorated. I find myself drawn to ancient pots with symbolic decorations.

I am also enjoying using mono printing techniques and exploring shape and negative space using collage.

In the coming months I am hoping to continue further exploring these ideas, symbols and practices. I am hoping to continue with my life drawing practice regularly and at some point start adding some figurative elements.

Long term, I hope to find a way of combining mono printing, collage, drawing, stitch and painting into my work.
