My First time painting an abstract landscape

As you may know by now I am entering Create Longridge this year, an art competition based in the Ribble Valley. In the run up to the competition I thought I’d try my hand at a few different styles of painting.

Recently I have been admiring a lot of abstract art, this is not something I have ever really done myself and I’ve always been a bit afraid to try. I started to do a totally abstract painting last week and it ended up as a muddy mess, so I thought I’d give it another go with a simple abstract landscape.

The above painting is what I came up with! It is based on an image of the Trough of Bowland which is not far from Longridge.

I used Acrylics and a palette knife for this painting, some of the acrylic paint is mixed with a textured medium to give it a bit of body and a grainy texture. I also used a bamboo skewer to scratch in some markings and add more interest.

The purple represents the beautiful purple Heather that grows at the Trough of Bowland.

The sky has the textured medium in which you can see in this up close photograph.

The only problem with painting is tidying up the mess afterwards!

What do you think of abstract paintings? I think this is an area I’m definitely going to continue to experiment with in the future.
