Classical Animal portraits

I have recently started painting a collection of Classical portraits in Acrylic paint. The thing that makes these portraits different is that the characters in the pictures all have the body of humans and the head of animals.

The idea came to me when I was preparing a piece of work for Blackburn Artists society. The theme that week was “rabbits and hares” but I fancied doing something a bit different from just a stand alone painting of a rabbit.

I’d seen online some contemporary photographs of women in classical poses dressed in historical outfits such as suits of armour and the idea came to me to combine the theme of rabbits and Hares with these images I found.

The resulting painting ended up as a slightly surreal Classical style painting. I have since decided to make a collection of these paintings with different animals and historical dress.

These are the reference photographs I used to create the following painting of a rabbit in armour:

After the success of this painting I decided to continue with the theme and try out another animal human combination.

So I produced this painting:

I think I may continue the series with a Fox/ human combination. What do you think?

I’ve also started a smaller series of dog paintings along similar lines, let me know what you think! I’ll keep you updated on my progress!

Hope you are all staying safe during this pandemic!
