Capturing memories of Lex

“Lex” pastel on paper, by Rachel Crawshaw
Process of drawing “Lex”

In June my Stepfather Lex passed away unexpectedly after developing an aggressive form of Leukaemia called AML.

As a tribute to his life my Mom asked me to create a portrait of Lex that we could display at his memorial/wake and that she could keep afterwards.

I made the portrait of Lex just a few days after his death. It was a very difficult but also quite cathartic process.

Earlier this year I had made a portrait of Lex’s dad as a gift for him that he had really loved, so I tried to create a similar style portrait of Lex.

In memory of Lex at his wake we collected donations for the charity Blood cancer UK. Thank you to everyone who came to pay their respects to Lex, to all who donated and to everyone who made kind comments and showed support for my family and I during this difficult time.
