At the end of May I went on holiday to North Devon. The scenery was beautiful and so when I returned I had a go at drawing this sketch from a photograph I took at the harbour at the bottom of the beautiful seaside village of Clovelly.

I really enjoyed the process of drawing this scene in simple 9B pencil on paper.

During June at Thursday art club we had a few sessions where each member of the group brought in a few sketches and we each had to create a new piece in colour based on another artist’s sketch.

I couldn’t make the first session but I sent in my sketch of Clovelly for another artist to use as inspiration and my friend and artist Diane created this fantastic watercolour pencil work inspired by my sketch.

For the next session I brought in three sketches based on photographs I had taken of people in art galleries and experiencing art, and my vessels sketchbook:

My friend, the artist Suzanne Worral, created the following piece inspired by my sketch of Diane and another artist and friend’s sketch- Jenny Welch.

Diane also used one of my ink drawings of a stack of cups from my vessels sketchbook to inspire her beautifully colourful stack of cups in soft pastels.

I created the following artwork inspired by interpreting three of my fellow artist’s sketches:

I really enjoyed this process of interpreting other artist’s work and creating something new, as well as seeing how other artists interpret my work in new ways.

One of the most interesting aspects of this process for me was the act of creating a narrative that was meaningful to me based off of other artists ideas and sketches.

For example my painting ended up being a meaningful piece to me, expressing my grief for the recent sudden and unexpected loss of my step father. But the images and ideas all stemmed from interpreting other artist’s work which had a totally different meaning for them.
