For a recent TAC (Thursday art club) session we explored creating abstract artworks. For this I returned to the grid method, but this time I focused specifically on some traditional composition ideas, turning each square into a different composition.
I found a worksheet online that describes 10 different approaches to composition and used these ten ideas to create individual miniature examples.
Compositional ideas include things like using vertical or horizontal elements, massing all the objects into one space or balancing the weight of objects equally to both sides.
Each compositional idea has its advantages and drawbacks but it was a really interesting way of learning about what makes an abstract painting interesting and/or pleasing and satisfying to look at.
My favourite was the 3 spots or triangle composition- which one are you drawn to?
