I am pleased to have a painting accepted for this years Haworth Art Gallery Open Exhibition. The exhibition runs from 27th September until 13th December, do pop in to have a look if you are in the area.

The painting I have submitted is “Summer Evening in Devon” this is an impressionist style painting I did specifically for the exhibition. It is based on a photograph of my mother in law and I sat on a bench in the garden on holiday in Devon this year.

To start I painted a background in a vibrant orange colour to contrast with the blue tones in the image, I then sketched out the composition in burnt umber.

I then built up the image starting with a large brush picking out the main shapes then gradually reducing the brush size to add in details. I wanted to capture the feeling of light and heat that I felt whilst on holiday and the warmth of the companionship between my mother and law and I as we relaxed in the sun.
