Recently I found a postcard on the floor whilst out walking. It was an advertisement for a local business but it sparked an idea. One of my personal challenges this year is to send 12 pieces of “fun” post e.g handwritten letters, postcards etc. The found postcard inspired me to create a collection of my own personalised post cards to send out.
I started with the theme of robins which have recently become an important symbol to our family. I created a cardboard stencil of a robin that I hand drew. I collaged the postcards with random scraps of paper and ephemera then using the stencil I painted out the negative space around the stencil to create my Robin symbols.
I added paint and inks around the robin shapes to add a bit more contrast and then stencilled over the back ground with a script stencil. For the finishing touches I added phrases onto the postcards.
I enjoyed creating this set of postcards but the best part was writing them and sending them out in the post, connecting with others in a slow yet meaningful way.
